Today was Field Trip Day with the students. (3rd-6th grades) After deliberating some options near the beginning of our trip here, we decided on the Kenyan National Museum in Nairobi. We figured it would be a fun outing for the kids, more cost-effective than some other options, and a great learning experience as well. We headed out early and back into one large rented van and our school’s smaller van that we drive around in most days. It was tight, but we fit everyone – over 80 people, if you could believe!
The museum staff were great, and it was a beautiful facility. We toured exhibits about history, animals, cultural traditions, political/civic topics and many more w/the kids. There was even a cool bee exhibit and several others. After several hours of touring, we took the kids over the snake center where they had venomous and non-venomous snakes, as well as a few other reptiles, like alligators, turtles and lizards. From there we wandered over to a neat park area that had swings, walking paths and a flowing waterfall/river. It was perfect weather outside. Then Teacher Earnest (after a long delay outside of his control) brought us lunch – part of which we’d picked up the day before (the drinks), and then he brought the chicken and “chips” (fries) and we all (us, teachers, admins, and students) and a had a picnic in one of the grassy areas there.
Finally we had a couple birthday songs to one of the students who turned 10 today, and a remote video call to Aunt Tami back in the US. Then prayers were offered, and we headed out. We got the students back to the school, safe and sound – and the day was a success.
On a more sobering note, please pray for Aidan tonight – he came down with a raging fever, body aches and more. We thought malaria was a potential diagnosis, but thankfully our friend from Amani’s doctor spoke with us late this evening, and told us it was likely something else, and we were able to go to the chemist (pharmacist) and get a prescription. (Malaria is very rare in this area of Kenya, so we kind of doubted it, but of course as parents, the thought crossed our mind – since Aidan and Isi have gotten quite a few bites even though the rest of us haven’t really) So please pray for his recovery. We’re watching him closely to see how the Lord heals him. Likely tomorrow’s plans will not include him and Rebecca – but we’ll pray and see.
We’re up super early tomorrow, so I’m heading to bed. Will likely have to post pictures at a later time.
Thanks everyone for reading,
Tom
